The 15th Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Risks will be held at the Atahotel Naxos Beach, Giardini Naxos (ME), Italy, 8–11 June 2016. The conference is organized by the University of Messina with support from the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

Venue

Giardini Naxos, located at the eastern coast of Sicily, is one of the most popular towns of the Messina countryside and is the first Greek colony in Sicily. Very few landscapes encompass the traditional beauties of Sicily like Giardini Naxos. Halfway between Messina and Catania, Giardini Naxos can be reached in less than an hour from Fontanarossa Catania Airport. From here there are excursions to Taormina, Siracusa, Agrigento, Palermo, the Aeolian Islands, Etna, the pine forest of Linguaglossa (a unique and charming sea-snow route) and the Alcantara valley with its gorges.

Tourism in Giardini Naxos is an important feature throughout the year. During the first weeks of June, the weather is usually warm, and visitors often combine activities at the beach during the day with visits to the city, shopping, recreation, etc., after the evening. It is also very close to Taormina (just 6 km), where you will feel the magical, mythical atmosphere spread all around which has enchanted visitors from all over the world for years and years. Nowadays visitors can still find fine examples of Taormina’s golden age: the splendid Greek Theatre, the Roman Naumachiae the 10th century Palazzo Corvaja, the 13th century Cathedral of Saint Nicolò, the 16th century Palace of the Dukes of Saint Stefano, the public gardens, the Badia Vecchia (Ancient Abbey), and many others.

From Catania Fontanarossa International Airport

The airport of Catania Fontanarossa International Airport (CTA) is the nearest and most convenient airport to Giardini Naxos. Located about 55 km southward, it is connected by direct flights to the main Italian cities like Milan, Rome, Naples, Venice, etc. ... and to many European cities such as Monaco (by Lufthansa), Barcelona (via Meridiana), Athens (by Alpi Eagles), Malta (with Air Malta), and many more.

Just at the exit of national arrivals, there is the bus station where you can find a direct bus to Taormina, which makes a stop in Giardini Naxos. The Recanati bust stop is your destination. A one-way ticket is approximately €8 per person, and the journey takes about an hour.

Alternatively, you can hail a taxi. The taxi rank is opposite the bus exit; the journey takes about an hour, and the cost of travel is about €80.

It is also possible to rent a car at the parking lot in front of the airport. All major rental companies are present (Avis, Hertz, Maggiore, Auto Europe). When you get off the airport, enter into the motorway A18 (Catania – Messina), reach the Giardini Naxos exit, and then turn on the left side in via Nazionale. After 300 metres, turn right into the Recanati area and go straight to the end of the street, and then turn right. The hotel is there.

By train

From the Taormina – Giardini Naxos railway station, about 3 km to the Giardini Naxos city centre, you can take the local bus (approx. €1.40 per one-way ticket) that will bring you directly into the Recanati area.
